Understanding Sound
To understand binaural beats, understanding of sound and how human ears process sound is needed. Dogs barking, horns blowing in traffic, the chirp of crickets, the radio blaring, or the sound of an alarm clock are everyday sounds that we are used to hearing. But have you ever thought about how these sounds are produced?
The majority of our senses are based on our chemical or light sensory receptors. As a stimulus of some sort is introduced into our environments, these receptors respond to give you a sense of smell, taste, or feel. Sound, however, is based on physical sensory receptors. A sound occurs when the molecules of any substance begin to move back and forth (vibrate); these vibrating molecules move through the substance producing a sound wave, which transmits the vibration through the air until it reaches our ears.
How the Ears Capture Sound
The ear is divided into three parts; the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear and each play a role in hearing. The outer ear is the visible part of the ear that we put our earrings on. Once a sound wave reaches the outer ear, it channels the sound wave into the middle ear and amplifies the sound. At this time, information about the direction of the sound source is also gathered. The sound then vibrates off the bones of the middle ear into the inner ear. Here, in the inner ear, the physical vibrations are turned into electrical impulses and passed on to the brain.
The signal sent to the brain from each ear is combined and the sound is processed to produce our sense of hearing. A binaural beat is a phenomenon that occurs when sound from each ear is attempted to be combined.
Understanding Binaural Beats
Binaural beats don’t actually happen. As we learned above, each ear interprets the sound wave that is sent to it. A binaural beat is produced through the use of headphones. Wearing headphones, two different tones are introduced; one frequency to the left ear and a different frequency to the right ear. As the brain attempts to mix these two tones together it also attempts to pinpoint the sound’s original location. This causes a slight hiccupping response, and the brain inserts a third sound, a pulsating or fluctuating beat between the pure tones.
Humans hear in the range of 20 to 20,000 Hertz. Sounds above or below this frequency can not be heard. Binaural Beats are only experienced in tones lower than 1,000 Hz, and the difference between the tones sent to each ear needs to be 30 Hz or less. Headphones are necessary so the sound travels directly into each ear without experiencing interference.
Using binaural beats
Research shows that binaural beats can be used to influence your current state of consciousness. Binaural beats can be used to manipulate and guide your brain into a different state of consciousness. With the use of stereo headphones, binaural beats are often mixed with pink noise, music, or nature sounds in order to assist individuals with achieving their desired state.
